Have you ever wondered why you may be having aches and pains even when you are not doing anything? Maybe you’ve been sitting all day behind a computer screen or just watching TV and your back starts to hurt, or your shoulder, or your neck.

Working out helps lower inflammation. Movement in proper amounts will help the body pump out inflammation from the affected areas which often causes the body to react with pain signals.

However this does need to be balanced as working an area too hard and too frequently will cause an increase in inflammation. Typically though, strengthening the area will result in less overall inflammation and improved function of the tissue. 

Improves Circulation

Inflammation is typically lowered through an increase of blood circulation to the area being exercised. With full body and cardiovascular style exercise the heart also becomes more efficient at pumping blood through the body as a whole.

Blood circulation is very important as it carries oxygen and nutrients to our muscle and connective tissue. In fact, if a part of our body was cut off from blood circulation it would atrophy and eventually die.

Many sedentary people have very poor circulation due to lack of movement which can lead to serious health problems because of this. 

Builds Strength

We all know that working out helps build strength in the area that we are exercising. The benefits go beyond just having an easier time with movement and making the muscles look better.

As mentioned above, if the nervous system perceives an area of the body being under threat it will typically respond with pain signals. One thing that can cause this is muscular weakness. If the back and core muscles are weak, the nervous system could think that holding you upright while sitting is dangerous so it responds with pain.

If the muscles in the shoulder girdle are weak and unstable just reaching for something overhead can be seen as a danger so the nervous system responds with pain signals.

By strengthening we are sending signals to the body that we have control over our movements and that it is safe to move. The nervous system then becomes less sensitive to those areas which will dampen or remove pain signals. 

It’s important to note that even though working out can greatly decrease the aches and pains in the body, doing it with poor body mechanics and improper loads can potentially cause more pain and injury.
